What qualities to look for in a piano teacher:
1. A Mastery of the instrument - ask her/him to play for you. Do you like their playing? They should show a depth of styles and levels that you desire - from a Chopin etude to perhaps a contemporary song.
2. Formal Education - at the collegiate level studies include piano performance as well as piano teaching classes. Knowledge of learning syles and methods, such as Suzuki.
3. Recital & other playing opportunities - Do they offer at least an annual recital? Involvement in The Piano Guild, MTNA competitions, etc?
4.Communication skills -Being able to "connect" to a student is as important as being an accomplished pianist.
